About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Sheila, Good way to set a positive tone for the upcoming course. You are showing them they can be successful if they will put forth the effort that is needed. If they do it can be a winning situation for them because they have used their life experiences to progress toward their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bob, You can work through different strategies for trying to bring the student under control but if he/she is not cooperative then they do need to be removed from the class. I have found when I have done that I have the respect of the other students because they know I want them to have a learning environment that helps them be successful and that I won't let a disruptive student ruin that. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sheila, Goals and objectives need to be clear and concise so the students can understand them and why the course is being offered as it is. Your approach shows them the "road" they will be taking if they follow the "map". Dr. Gary Meers
Guy, This a very direct definition that provides support and direction to the learning process for your students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Paula, You have a good foundation from which you can now plan your instruction. By segmenting the content you will be able to help your students get the critical content in a timely and efficient manner. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, Your thinking is right on target. The more relevancy and application that can be made with course content the greater value it will be to the students. They start to see an ROI for their efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, By offering some foundational instruction you are expanding the learning opportunities as well as success factors for these students. I know they appreciate your efforts to help them be successful early on in the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Anna-Maria, Personality is a big part of being an instructor. The human factor goes a long way in keeping students in classes. Thanks for sharing these comments with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Cory, I like your approach. By both telling and sharing in printed form your expectations you are establishing the foundation of how the course is going to be conducted and what the outcomes are going to be. Reduces student questioning because they have the information in front of them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, So true. We all like to know what is going on and students are no exception. Clear and concise information about the course is essential right from the very beginning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
