About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Shelley, Both of these strategies are winners. The students like to see application of the content through case studies and guest speakers, especially program graduates. They start to see themselves in the same position as the graduates they are listening to. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Arthur, Good strategies to employ. You are offering support to your students in a variety of ways and that keeps them engaged for the long haul. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Anna-Maria, Support and encouragement are two important parts of instructional growth. You are giving your students these elements as they move through the course and serves to reinforce their self confidence. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Peter, You are using variety and change of pace to enable your students to keep focus on the content they need for success. Your model enables them to be engaged both as listeners as well as contributors. This increases their excitement for the course and the information being shared. I like what you are doing with this longer session class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Alexcia, All good strategies to follow in getting a class off to a good start. Students need this time to get a feel for the instructor and how the class is going to operate so they can start to see how they fit into the class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Peter, Good insight into how to welcome students into a class and getting them feeling comfortable with their new surroundings. The development of rapport at this point can well mean the difference from quitting or continuing on with the program. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jeff, Knowing expectations greatly reduces student frustrations and stress. The syllabus gives them the direction they need to move through the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carrie, I agree with your assessment of the value of a well developed syllabus. It is a road map (GPS) for everyone in the class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Renee, This is a very good approach to instructional planning. As you expand your expertise as an instructor you are using a great resource and this is the experience that each student brings to the class. I wish you much teaching success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, Very important to remember. This is why you need to constantly "read" the class so you can provide support to students when and where needed. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
