About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Godwin, Good strategies to follow to expand your instructional expertise and knowledge. The more methods we know about the more variety we can bring to our classes. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, Good point. Most instructors do know their content at such a intense and in-depth level. By having our students use graphic organizers we can help them connect the content to sequence and then application in a way that makes sense. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Jesse, You ask a good question but the answer is hard to come up with because there are so many variables involved in giving the answer. If the students seem to reject the information you are giving them then yes, it is too much. On the other hand they need to see the value and future of what they are being taught and the skills they are developing. This is where the earning potential comes into their career planning. So just play it by ear and be responsive to how your students react the the standards you are pushing them… >>>

Linda, Keep up the good work you are doing. I can tell you have passion for both your subject matter as well as your students' success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Good points and your last sentence says it all for instructors. Without patience teaching becomes a lot harder. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Linda, I am a big user of case studies in my classes. They really help to get the students involved in using their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Thanks for reminding us of their value. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Karen, You have listed some great strategies for getting students involved in the learning process. Students are used to being passive learners and you are helping them to become active learners. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gerald, How do you do this with your students? Thanks for your input on this. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rasiel, Good point. Application and relevance has to be seen by the students if they are going to become engaged in the learning process. They need to feel they are getting an ROI on their efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, I agree with the passion part of teaching. We have to "bring it" if we expect our students to be excited about the content. The other strategies you mention help set the stage for successful learning and student engagement. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
