About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Deanna, I think this as well. As learners students need to see how they can "connect the dots" between abstract concepts and realistic applications. The more examples we can give them the greater their skills will be at doing such. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Cecilia, With your experience as a student in using different learning styles you are able to adapt your instructional delivery to incorporate these different styles. This approach helps your students to achieve success and learn how to learn through different deliveries. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Good strategies for engaging the different levels of students you have in your courses. You are customizing your instruction based upon individual student need with this approach. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amer, Good points about the needed balance in supporting and praising students. They need to receive both types of feedback so they can grow as a result of learning how to avoid the mistakes they have made in the future while knowing they are doing a good job as a result of receiving praise from their instructor. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marshall, So do I. Sometimes the effort of getting to know such a student and trying to help him/her to see the value of the course you are teaching will move them forward on the success trail. I am always sad when it doesn't but I do take comfort in knowing that I as a professional educator have done all I can to help that student to be successful. It was their choice not to be, not my lack of engagement with them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ronald, I like the way you incorporate both the technical aspects of message therapy (knowledge of muscles) into career success (more than lotion spreaders). Becoming successful in the field is a multi-step process as you mention and the students need to see how each step moves them closer to the career goal they have set for themselves. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shawna, Students as you know like to hear stories about our experiences in the field. These stories help to establish the fact that we have earned our living in the field and that we know what we are talking about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marshall, We need to remind ourselves of our passion for our field and then strive to make our delivery fresh and engaging each time the class meets. This will enhance student engagement and our proficiency in instruction. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shawna, So true so that is why we need to try and introduce new deliveries and content in our courses each time we teach them. One new teaching strategy helps us refine our delivery skills as well as keeps our interest in a course that we may have taught many times before. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, I like your comfortable soft approach to helping students solve challenges that might take them out of school. You are doing in such a way that you are building rapport with them in such a way that they have confidence in your knowledge and respect for your attention to their needs. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
