About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Renee, You have hit upon the key elements of instructional success through your comments. This is what a well prepared professional educator will come to the class with. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carl, Good points and items that need to be considered each time we instructors meet our classes. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, This is a good idea because it gives you a lot of insight on what the students value in an instructor. Then you can build around this input as long as your personality will support the strategies shared. For some instructors that is easier to do because their personality fits that strategy for others they will need to modify the strategy to fit their instructional style. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jeanne, You have a good list of professional development activities laid out here. Something you might want to try is to video yourself teaching. You may be surprised when you review the tape but I have found that you get valuable feedback from watching yourself present and interact with students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
JoAnn, This is a common theme for the MA programs I have observed. Instructors in these programs need to develop a wide variety of strategies that will keep the students engaged and focused on their knowledge and skill development. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jeffrey, The old saying about "a picture is worth a thousand words" comes to mind with your comment. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Diane, Career development is a series of steps and the more you can illustrate to students what those steps are the more accurately they will be able to see how their careers can develop. You have a good way of showing them with this approach. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sean, Relevancy and application are two words that need to be a part of all instructional planning. Student value content more when they can see application and relevancy in the content. You make a good point about this. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Peggy, This is where instructors need to be creative in their approach so they can find the key to learning for students that come from different backgrounds or are ELL. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jeffrey, This shows the value of understanding the diversity of experiences and backgrounds of students. They recognize the value of working with different individuals and when they find success they want to repeat it, thus the rearranging of themselves into success groups. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
