About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Mike, Good start in answering the question. Your attitude and approach to the classroom is very good. You are there to help the students to move closer to their career goals and the more support and encouragement you can give them the better. In the meantime you will continue to expand your expertise as an educator to the benefit of everyone. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Norman, Sometimes students forget that their instructors are former students themselves. We all have been where they are and we understand their challenges of balancing life and being a student. By knowing this they can understand more accurately the value of the content you are sharing with them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kimberlee, I like your strategy. This puts a model of what good teaching is all about in mind and you can develop your instruction from there. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Terry, So true and so important. Listening is a powerful learning tool for us. As instructors the more we listen the more accurate we can be in customizing our instruction to keep our students moving toward their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Edward, Thank you for sharing this story. This is what teaching is all about. You are impacting the lives and futures of your students for years to come. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Terry, This connection is very important. They need to see that all instructors are former students themselves. We have all set where they are setting. That is how we got to the point we are instructors. We do understand their situations and that we are there to help them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ashley, You are creating a connection to their future from the very beginning of your course and I like that a lot. Too often students get focused on the requirements of the course and don't see how success in this course will benefit them as they move toward their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Craig, You last two words really set the tone for class. Respect has to be a key part of any learning situation. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michele, I agree with you about the challenge of finding this balance. I think this is true for most of us educators. By bringing in numerous application opportunities you will be able to engage the students more and will have greater success with them acquiring the foundational knowledge since they will need it to do the applications. Strive to help them see the connection between knowledge and application and you will be helping them to move toward career success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Craig, I agree. When there are clear and concise expectations outlined along with realistic assignments there is going to be am atmosphere of growth and learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
