About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Jane, So true. An instructor needs to help students to connect the dots between content and application so they will be able to take their newly acquired knowledge and skills to real world settings. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Siobhan, Right you are in terms of maximum learning for students. The more application and relevancy you can help your students to make of the course content the greater their engagement is going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, Yes, they are. This is why we need to get test results and graded assignments back to students as soon as we can. This way they can see the progress they are making in the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Brian, Competency based courses provide so many opportunities to students to acquire the needed skills in realistic settings. Your students are gaining those competencies with repeated practice and application. At the end of the course they can hopefully weld at a level that meets industrial standards for the field. You are in a position to coach them through the learning process which is both exciting and impacting on your students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, So important to keeping students in school. Knowing you care helps motivate them to continue in school when life challenges seem to overwhelm them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, I think sessions like this are so important because of the reasons you mention. This brings more buy-in from students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ashley, I think you are doing a great job of providing support to your students through the strategies you have listed in an online environment. The students know they can call upon you for advice and support as needed even though you are not on-site. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amber, I like to use mentors as well. I have been fortunate the have had some great educators from which I could get advice and counsel. I strive to be a mentor to our new instructors coming in as a part of my giving back to the profession. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amber, Good approach to bring the human aspect of teaching to your students. Knowing they have your support is so important in keeping them engaged and focused throughout the course. The human factor in teaching is so critical and you are bringing that each time you enter the classroom. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carlos, Students retain much more through integrated and interactive learning. Your approach provides them the opportunities to do both as that master the course content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
