About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Cindy, Thank you for sharing your success story about BINGO with us. I use a lot of games in my courses with great outcomes. Students like play games and be competitive. Games make learning fun. Plus, they appeal to everyone, even those with life challenges. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bryan, I agree. Students like to hear stories and examples from their instructor's experiences. They help to make the content of the course more real to them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amanda, Good reminder for instructors. We need to bring variety and change of pace to our classes if we are going to keep students engaged and focused on what is being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dianne, I use learning groups for the reasons you cite. They are an effective way to get students involved and participating in the class discussions. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Juanita, Good way to get a feel for the class. As you say you can tell from the nature of the questions asked by the students how to shape your instructional planning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, This approach also shows the students the value the instructor attaches to what is contained in the syllabus so they need to follow the syllabus throughout the course so they can meet the expectations of the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Anthony, Learners don't like surprises when it comes to course expectations or requirements. They need to be laid out clearly and understood by the students this way they can focus on on meeting those expectations and requirements in a consistent way. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dawn, Yes, it does. A well prepared syllabus becomes the road map (GPS) for the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amanda, So true and so important. Getting students settled into a new course and feeling confident about their ability to be successful is critical. A positive first impression sets the stage for future classes that will enable the students to continue along the success trail. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michele, I think this is a great way to see student progress. Seeing and teaching them again after 9 months has to be rewarding in that you get to see their growth while they get to enjoy your teaching once again at a much higher level of confidence and knowledge. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
