About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Nevine, Good point and one we need to always remember as we step into the classroom or lab. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shannon, Good point. We can't take the "one size fits all" approach if we are going to be successful. We have to bring variety to our delivery and as a result we will engage our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Beth, Our job as educators is never boring that is for sure. The diversity of backgrounds and life experiences that bring students to our classes is always a learning experience for me. There are so many different reasons for being in class as you mention. The key is to connect to those reasons and then build an educational plan for each student. The ones that are there under force are the most challenging but if you can connect with them and they catch fire about the class than it is fun to see them progress. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carolyn, Understanding the life experiences and backgrounds of students really helps in targeting instruction. Good point, thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Antoinette, Good way to get your students to see the "big picture" from the beginning of class. Once they get the outside items taken care of then they can concentrate on the class and be successful in it. In addition, they know they have a supportive instructor available to them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jamie, This is a very important part of being an educator. Provide support and encouragement to and for your students and you will experience much teaching success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lawrence, Student numbers can be a challenge. Our school to "save" money has decided to double all classes in terms of numbers. So all of my classes will now have at least 70 students per class. Still trying to figure out how I am going to meet the needs of all the students and keep the class on target in terms of progress. Should be a very interesting fall. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Karen, I wish you much success as you expand your instructional strategies and expertise as an educator. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jamie, So important and so true. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, This is a comfortable and supportive way to engage students and get them focused on the upcoming course sessions. I like your approach to the first day. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
