About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Wesley, So true and so important to student success. Many of my students come from situations where they have never had any kind of support for anything and knowing they have someone they respect and respects them support them is a powerful motivator. This is what teaching is all about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carl, Good points about student fears. My non-traditional students seem to have the higher level of fears because they have been out of school for a number of years and they feel like they can't be successful in the class when they are up against younger students that understand technology better. I have to work hard to keep them engaged and feeling like they can be successful. When they are it is a wonderful time for both the students and myself. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Roger, These students are powerful motivators for the current students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, In a subject like this it is so important to reinforce their successes, no matter how small they are. Adult learners that have been out of school for a while seemed to need even more support as they can easily become discouraged and want to drop out. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kimberly, I think you will really like the results you will get from using mini-lectures. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tara, I have found the same. Stories from the field help to make the course content real for the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mabel, This is a very well balanced approach to teaching. You are helping your students to learn through different methods and strategies. I wish you much success in your teaching efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tracy, Right you are. In addition, they will drift away during class and it will be tough to get their interest back. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rekha, We need to do this if we are going to keep the focus and engagement of students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, Offering different deliveries of content help to target the different learning styles and preferences of students. You are right on with your comments about the value of making these types of adjustments to the delivery process. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
