About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Kathryn, You are helping your students to build collateral in their futures with this approach. They need to see how something like this certification gives them an edge over other applicants. They are investing in themselves when they acquire these types of additional certificates and/or skill sets. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Florene, So true about the role model need. By sharing the fact that you have been successful in a career prior to becoming an instructor you are showing your students that you understand what they are going through since you were once in their shoes. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bess, What are some way that you do this effectively? Thanks. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Discussion Comment
Deanna, This is a good point that you make. We need to have a way that we can let the students know they need help and then provide it in a low risk way. If we don't it is easy for the students to just drop out and we lose them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Bess, Can you expand on this? Also share with us some ideas of how you do this? Thanks. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Andrew, Key word in your comment -- respect. Respect needs to go both ways. If it does then rapport will develop and everyone in the class will benefit. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
John, I like the way you introduce your area and personalize it to and for each student. This shows them that they have an expert available to them for the duration of the course so they need to put forth the effort to acquire all of the information from you during this time that they can. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Andrew, So true. When we are excited about the content the students get excited as well. They start to see the value of the content that is being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nashon, Passion for one's field is a powerful motivator. The more enthusiasm and excitement we bring to the class the more involvement we are going to have from our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tina, This is so important especially for those students that have been out of school for a while or had problems while in secondary school. Knowing they have a supportive and caring instructor that wants to help them be successful is a powerful motivator. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
