About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Amanda, It is fun isn't it? This is one of the fun parts of being a teacher. We get to hear and observe what our students are learning and how they are developing as pre-professionals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Annette, They really need to develop the connection between the course content and their career development. The more ways you can do it the more they will be engaged. Good point. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sherile, This is a good strategy to use with the students. It gets them to reflect on what is driving them to be successful in the classroom. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Julie, Yes, they can and this is why it is so important to always reflect the highest professional standards and behavior. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Keri, All of these actions and behaviors contribute to the development of a professional image. You are right about the need to always remember this no matter where we are in the school or classroom. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

iScott, Set the tone for the class with a well prepared syllabus that outlines the expected behavior for the class. Reinforce this behavior as you do class introductions and the welcome. When the behavior occurs ask to talk with the individual privately. Talk with the individual and ask for his/her cooperation in the class. This will generally result in better behavior and performance. It this doesn't work then put the student on a behavior contract which outlines the expected behavior with a specific time frame set out for the change in behavior. During all of this keep your administration informed… >>>

Tim, This is not uncommon. My students are much like yours as well. They want to get involved and doing something where they can make application of the things they are learning. Good point about engaging these learners. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nashon, You said it all in your comments. We need to bring our A game and energy to class each time we meet. To do less is unfair to the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Chrystal, Variety and change of pace are two components of engaged learning. You are doing both with your approach. Keep up the good work because I know your students are learning a lot while enjoying your classes. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
LaShonda, So true. By taking this approach you have given the students a foundation upon which to build throughout the course and everyone knows where the course is going. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
