About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

James, Great list of ways to have an enjoyable and engaging class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jacquie, Good plan to follow. The variation and change of pace format really helps to keep the students engaged as you know. Sometimes instructors forget this and just drone on even though the mind's of the students have checked out. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Margaret, Your last sentence says it all. Going into a class unprepared is an awful experience for everyone. It is so much easier to prepare and then go into the class and enjoy teaching. This is what makes the job rewarding. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jacquie, Good suggestion. The more variation we can provide in our delivery of instructional content the better. These methods help to keep the students engaged and focused throughout the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dawn, What have been some of your best teaching experiences? Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Samantha, This is a common question raised by students and you are doing a good job of showing the "why" for the content. They need to see the ROI of the content in relation to relevance and application. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Elaine, I like the way you set the stage for a positive class. You lay out everything for the students and then invite their input. This is a supportive and confidence building format. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jacquie, I agree. With the signed sheet on file the students can't claim that they didn't get a copy of the syllabus so they shouldn't have to meet the course expectations. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dawn, I think both ways increases the cognitive retention rate for students. I use the same approach because experience has shown me that I have to repeat it several ways before the students retain the expectations, polices and requirements. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Margaret, Thanks for sharing this introduction ice breaker with us. It is a good one that really gets the students going without causing them stress. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
