About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Thadeus, One of the laws of teaching is that there are no constants and your comments support that. Effective instructors are flexible and are able to adapt to the needs of the currently enrolled students. This is what instructional planning is all about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Paul, It seems that many students don't realize that we have had extensive life experiences or we wouldn't be teaching. The sharing of our experiences and work situations help to make both us and our content more real for the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
John, This is so effective when used frequently and in a way that shows the students how much we value them and their input. Good point. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Discussion Comment
Roberto, Student feedback is such a valuable tool for many reasons. You make a number of good points about the value of using student feedback effectively. Thanks for sharing them with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, Good strategy to use. The more application and relevance that students can make and see the greater the content retention there is going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
John, So true and so important to the total learning effort. The more connection we have with our students the easier it is to earn their respect and engage them as learners. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, Good point and well said. If we remember this our instructional efforts will be greatly enhanced. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sarah, Good point. Having a baseline understanding of where the students are and what their learning preferences are enhances the ability to plan targeted instruction. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Patricia, Right you are. The more we know the more we can customize our instruction to support them and their learning efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, I really like your "soft" respective way of including everyone into your course. You give value to each student and what he/she has to contribute. This includes all students just as you mention. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us. I know is will be of value to others. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
