About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Jamie, Your course sounds like a great one for the students. I like the way you are showing them that they can and should be change agents as they grow in their careers. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Judy, I have experienced the same students that you refer to in your comments. I work as hard as I can with each student but when a student decides that he/she will do only the minimum to get by and get money I have a tough time with it. I hate to see potential go to waste but I cannot be successful for them. So their choice to get by is one that will result in their lives being lived by just getting by. Sad but a part of challenges presented to us as educators. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
James, Thank you for sharing this example of how student feedback is working for you. I know this information will be valuable for other instructors that are just starting their teaching careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, Good point. I teach the same set of courses four times a year so I can really appreciate your comments about class delivery becoming routine. I strive to introduce a new instructional delivery item as well as a new content topic each time I teach a class. This way there is something new for me as well as the students each course phase. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rhonda, Thanks for sharing the proverb. I like it because it illustrates how we need to approach the classroom and our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, This personal attention is so important to the support of students as well as their retention in school. You have a good plan for providing such support with the strategies you listed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Roberta, This is such an important part of teaching. It is also a reward of teaching because of the rapport we get to develop with our students while they are in our course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alan, I use guest speakers and field trips for the reasons you mention. They reinforce the value of the content that I am sharing with my students and that increases their motivation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erika, Good way to help your students develop a school support system while showing them the value of networking. This is an important part of students career development as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, With this approach the students know what has be covered and accomplished at the end of each class session. This helps them to see their learning progress. Good plan. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
