About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Francisco, So true. Examples from the "real" world help to reinforce the value of the content. The students can get a mental picture of how they will soon be working in the field and having success much like the stories you share with them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rosemary, Students really like stories about the field. By weaving them into the lectures you get to reinforce the content and increase the value of it to the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Bronzel, Right you are. If you are not excited about your subject it is for sure the students won't be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Francisco, Very good point. We need to be flexible and adapt our instructional delivery to meet the needs of our current group of students. Each class is different and our instruction needs to target those differences and meet their needs. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, Good points about how to keep your instruction vibrant and your passion for your subject high. This is what makes for good teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rosemary, Refocusing really helps to keep the energy and enthusiasm up in a class. We instructors need to remember this each time we enter the classroom. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, Great way to introduce the success factor into the learning environment plus it is so true. Your success is their success that is why you are a teacher. You are helping them to reach their goals and achieve success as a result of your instruction. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Travis, Being fair and consistent is essential for teaching success. If you aren't a user of either of these you will have a lot of challenges in maintaining control of the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Qadar, You have a good strategy for starting a new class. This way you have a connection with each student and can move the class forward in getting ready to get engaged in the content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bronzel, With adult students life challenges can really interfere with their education. For many of them the classroom is a refuge to which they go to learn and work on improving their lives. In the class they know that for a little while they don't have to worry about "real' life. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
