About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Jenny, This is the "listening" part of professional growth. Through student feedback we can grow and improve as effective and efficient instructors. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Claudette, Good point about finding balance in our lives as instructors. We have life challenges as well so we need to cope with them while remaining professional in all that we do while teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Valerie, Yes, they do. As a result of rapport more engagement and learning is going to occur. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jenny, The last sentence of your comments needs to be reinforced to all educators. For our students when taking a course it is the first and hopefully only time they will take it. It is a new to them even if we have taught it a hundred times before. We need to be fresh and current with what we offer. To do anything less is to shirk our dedication to our field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jenny, You are a model for your students as a result of having been a student in your college plus the successes you have had in your career. The students can see that you understand where they are coming from because you sat in the same seat they are occupying now. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Claudette, This is a very good point. The more we know about students and their reasons for being in our classes the more accurately we can customize our instruction to meet their needs. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jared, You are teaching is a tough situation because you need to engage the students immediately and then share with them content that they may not be too excited about. Your approach is a good one because you are using variety and fun to communicate your topic. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Cameron, Good way to keep the students informed and current. Sometimes I think students are like goldfish. It is said that goldfish have a memory that lasts approximately 2 seconds so the next time they swing by an object it is like it is the first time they have ever seen it before. Well I have found that students are much like that. I put it in the syllabus, I announce it and yet on due day they want to know why I didn't tell them in advance about whatever is due. So keep up the reminders and this way… >>>

Jennifer, These Q&A sessions can be extremely valuable for students as they get a chance to clarify and/or learn something that they didn't get the first time or would like to explore further. It is a win win session for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristy, You are going to really like the results you get from using this format to introduce the content of your syllabus. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
