About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Prairie, You make a very good point about how you can over plan your instructional delivery to the point that there is a loss of learning effectiveness. The strategy should be to offer variety to the students so they can use their different dominate intelligences to learn at different times in the course while increasing their ability to acquire knowledge through different venues. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bob, I like your way of dealing with the cell phone issues. I am sure you get some surprised looks when you do this, on the other hand I am sure you and your students learn a lot from the student research that is done. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Earle, This is a good approach as they need to be able to see the content in smaller segments and then put those segments into a global format. They don't become overwhelmed this way. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Keli, Right you are. You can't get them all but at the end of the class if you have prepared well and worked at engaging them you can go home and feel that you have done a professional job of being a good instructor. This is what keeps me going class after class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, You are projecting to your students that you value them and appreciate them being in the class and this is so important. By sending the message of energy and involvement you are setting the tone for the class. This is what teaching is all about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alissa, I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to what you are saying. Keep in mind that adults are only taller children. They still like to play games and receive prizes. The Hershey candy company has been my greatest ally when it comes to keeping students engaged. My students will work themselves to death just to get a candy kiss, they really like those with almonds in them. So keep up the good work and keep giving out the treats. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, Good strategy because it shows value to the students. You are listening and learning from them and they appreciate that even when their ideas cannot be implemented. They know you are focused on them and their input and this increases their engagement in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alissa, This is what make both teaching and learning fun. You are getting to be the learner before your students are because you are looking for current content that can be used in your course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rekha, It really does. This is an extremely important part of retaining students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Danielle, I agree. They need to see how being invested in the course is an investment in themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
