About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Mark, Sometimes these things happen with no real clear reason as to why. What you did to overcome it speaks well of your abilities as a teacher. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, This is a very important part of successful teaching. The students need to see how they fit in the class and that they are respected for the contributions they can make to the class and in return they will have the support of the instructor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Christopher, Good strategy in terms of putting your grade scheme in print. When it comes to students questioning an instructor's grading it is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when so the more prepared an individual is the easier it is to work through the question and resolve the situation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Christopher, I like your use of analogies and I am sure your students do as well. They help to reinforce the point in a more understandable way so keep on using them. In terms of effective teaching your point is a good one and one we need to remember as we do our instructional planning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Charles, Application and relevancy are two words that need to be a part of all instructional planning. When students realize that the content that is being shared has both relevancy and application to their lives and their future they start to move forward in their understanding of their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, Thank you for this list of ideas for engaging students in learning. I know it will be of help to many other instructors that are looking for engagement ideas. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terry, You make a good point. Students really like examples of the content being covered. With the examples the students see the relevancy of the content being offered and how they can make application of it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, The syllabus is the GPS for the course. It is what the instructor can refer to when there are questions and the students know what the course expectations are as outlined in the syllabus. Everyone is on the same page with a well prepared syllabus. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terry, This the point where we get course buy in and so we need to make sure the stage is set for maximum learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, Right you are. Teaching is a total organizational and delivery package. As instructors we need to make sure we are prepared in each of the areas you mention if we are going to present our professional best and get our students engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
