About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Marita, This is so important if you are going to keep all of the students engaged in the learning process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Donna, You are doing a good job of providing student support. This support is valuable to them as they move through their classes and hit challenging topics that require some additional input from their instructor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sandra, Many instructors have expressed the same frustration with canned PP slides as you have. Some take the presentations apart and then reformat them into mini-lectures to suit their own instructional style. Your approach is educational sound and enables the students to stay focused as you move through the class session. I would recommend that you continue using this method if it is yielding the results you want. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jennifer, Immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is a powerful learning tool. You are providing them with such opportunities with this approach. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Scott, Students like variety and change of pace in their learning. You are offering them such with your strategies. Thanks for sharing them with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lucinda, Sounds like a fun approach to teaching students the value that historical knowledge can have in their lives. This is what engaged learning should be about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Donald, A person after my own style. I teach a 6 hour block and food is a powerful motivator plus we have good interaction when we take a snack break. I think some of the students come to class just to find out what the snack is for that night. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Emily, Thank you for these good comments about the reasons for making expectations clear. Once the expectations are made clear then the building process for learning can start. If the expectations aren't clear then confusion becomes the norm rather than learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Len, I have learned the same thing from many years of teaching. So I repeat it several times over and outline it in the syllabus. As I am sure you have experienced I still get questions about due dates and test times. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mike, How do you to your hand outs and oral presentations to make your expectations clear? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
