About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Nazanin, You have captured the essence of having a well developed syllabus with your comments. A well prepared syllabus makes our job just that much easier. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Maren, First thank you for sharing your experience with a poorly developed syllabus and how your experience brought you to the point you have a well developed one. In answer to your question, yes, yes, yes. I over the years have written down the questions that students brought up about this item or that in the syllabus. I went in an rewrote that item and make it a part of my syllabus the next time I taught the course. Over the years my syllabi has gotten very refined and that is a result of student input. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Hieu, Good example and one that we all can and should relate to. We have to get our support system organized and ready to go before we can enjoy the outcome such as a ball game or watching a movie. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dennis, You got that right. We have to support our students with an environment that will help them learn rather than be uncomfortable. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nazanin, Good for you. You are doing a great service to and for your students by trying to the best of your ability to reduce any distractions from their learning success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
LATONYA, Good point about PowerPoint. I think too many students have died already as a result of too many slides, too much content and too long sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, Welcome to a great profession! I have been at it a long time and still can't wait to get to my class and share with students. Your professional development strategy is a good one so keep at it and enjoy your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Roy, I like your approach a lot. You are using your own interests and abilities to enhance learning in your classes. I am sure your characters help to liven up your classes. Students appreciate instructors that work to get and keep them engaged. Thanks for your comments on this topic. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrew, Your two cents is very valuable because you are right on with your comments. This is what teaching should be about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Philip, Students like to hear these stories because they help the content to come alive for them. The more you can reinforce what you are teaching with these real world examples the greater the retention there will be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
