About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Tonya, Good point and one we instructors need to remember as we do our instructional planning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tricia, Students love to play games no matter what age they are. I use games a lot in reviewing material. Jeopardy is a winner. Another fun one is Family Feud. The students really like to come up with the questions and then see if they can answer them in a competitive format. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Ken, Good point. Listening is a powerful learning tool that enables us to more accurately target our instruction to our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dennis, I agree and if we don't stay current we are doing a dis-service to our students and our profession because we are not bringing our best professional expertise to the classes we teach. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ken, Good caution, thank you for making this point. We need to bring enthusiasm to our students but within a framework that they can see the value of why we are excited about our field. This is what will sell our content to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Caroline, I teach the same format. I go for three hours (4-7pm) and then teach the same course again for three hours (7-10pm). I have to be very organized so I can remember what I have said to each class. It is a challenge but I really enjoy my students. You make a good point about how different they are and as a result require customized planning to meet the needs of each class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Hieu, Great strategies for teaching challenging content. The more application that can be made the greater retention of content there is going to be. You have an instructional process that supports their learning in a way that keeps them engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Caroline, Good plan to follow. I am sure this reduces student frustration and questions because they have been walked through the expectations. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Hieu, This is a very comprehensive and supportive way of informing students about the polices, requirements and expectations of the program and courses. This really helps to set the stage for student success since they know what they must do to be successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, Foundation, foundation, foundation. You make a good point about making sure to cover the basics and not assume knowledge. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
