About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Michelle, Very well put in terms of the value of making a positive first impression. The first class session has a lot to do with whether the students will come back and if they will see themselves as being part of the class you are teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jerod, Right you are. It is a deep hole to dig out of and easy to avoid by preparing for and presenting a good first impression. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Eurico, Good point and one we instructors need to remember each time we start a new class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jennifer, Common problem we face. I talk individually with such a student and try to understand why they don't care to be there. Then I work with them to create a learning plan that will engage them. If they still don't want any part of the class I move on knowing I have done all that I can to engage them. I hate to admit the fact that I can't reach every student but I do know I have completed my end of the educational bargain and the rest is up to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Regina, I use the elephant example all the time with my students so they will see that they in fact can learn the information if they will bite size it. I plan my instruction to deliver the content in small bites so they can see how they can acquire the needed information in a manageable way. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Variety in instructional delivery helps to keep you engaged which also will engage the students. I teach the same courses over and over again so I can relate to your situation. I try to introduce something new each time I teach because then I am engaged in the class because I don't know how the new case study, role play or learning group activity will work. I have with the new strategy and the students benefit from my enthusiasm for the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jerod, Student feedback is always a good way to identify ways you can improve your instructional efforts. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Regina, This support is very important because of the common problem of getting caught up in the present while missing the progress that has been made. Good way to help them see how much they are learning and moving closer to their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brant, I have graduates come into my class for the same reason you state. They help the students to see the value of the content being presented and help to motivate them to be successful. This is a win win for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Shannon, Good strategy for analyzing the learning needs of your students. This enables you to customize your instruction which will engage your students more efficiently and effectively. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
