About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Rebecca, Students love to hear stories from their instructors about their field. These stories help to motivate and inspire them to wanting more success in their classes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rebecca, Good point. By virtue of being an instructor we signed on as life long learners. If we don't want to be such then we need to get out of the teaching profession because we will not be current in best practices or our field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rebecca, I like this approach because it helps to develop respect between them and yourself while also showing them that you have a personal and human side to being their instructor. Exchanging small talk about weather, sports, etc. helps to set the tone for the upcoming class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cheryl, Being there a little early and greeting the students sets the tone for what is going to come that class period. Also, being early enables the instructor to get a "read" on the mood of the class that day and be able to adapt to where the students are and increase their engagement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Judy, Communication on a regular basis really helps to keep students engaged. They will respect the instructor as a result which in turn sets the stage for the development of rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Judy, Good point and one that we need to keep fresh in our minds as we approach the classroom or lab. We need to support and encourage to they will put forth the effort to be successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Virginia, Learners like variety and change of pace and if they have both then they will be engaged at a much higher level and for longer periods of time. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joseph, This is such an essential part of the learning process. The students need to be able to see the value and relevancy of what they are being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joseph, It really does due to the impact it has on the minds and learning sets of the incoming students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Virginia, Great to hear about how you are prepping yourself to be at the same place your students are each time you meet with them. Thank you for the kind words about how our content has been of help to you. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
