About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Michelle, Good point about setting up students in a way that they can see the value of them wanting to be successful. Yes, they do have to want it and they have to put forth effort to get it. Nothing comes without personal investment and they need to realize that. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Debra, It is the meet - meet process. You and they are doing just what you say, sizing each other up and trying to decide how the course is going to go. It is essential that a positive foundation is created for the class to build upon. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Debra, I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I understand your comments clearly. It takes special effort to keep them engaged and focused throughout the evening. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jan, Clear goals and objectives are a must. Without them there is not direction or accountability. When this is the situation then learning starts to collapse and the class is no longer effective. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cynthia, Good start to your professional development. There are many opportunities out there we educators just need to keep our eyes open for them and take advantage of them when we can. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Debra, Yes, it is. Helping them to connect the dots between the class and the real world is an important part of their career development so the more you are able to help them do this the more valuable your instruction becomes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jan, You have shared with us a great list of professional development strategies that will enhance your effectiveness while engaging students at a higher level in the learning process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
J, So true and so important to and for the development of all students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Eman, Your last point is a good one in terms of how communication and interaction impact learners in the two different delivery formats. We need to make sure we are being effective in our outreach to students in both cases and use the different formats that will enable engagement to occur. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Eman, This is how a well developed discussion group should function. Information is shared, opinions given and growth encouraged. This is a win win for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
