About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

James, This is an important understanding for students to have. Knowing they have a caring instructor that will listen goes a long way in keeping a student moving forward in a class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Angela, Good point and an essential part of what we are about as educators. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Chloe, I call this strategy "connecting the dots" between theory and application. The more we can connect these dots the value the students will see in the content we are sharing. In addition, they will see relevancy as a result of the examples that are brought forth in the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Frederick, Yes, this information is extremely helpful in instructional planning for the reasons you cite. The more we know about our students the more accurately we can be with our instructional planning and delivery. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Melissa, This has been my experience as well with mixed generations of learners. Once they learn to respect each other and start to work with each other it is amazing the growth that occurs within the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Richard, This is so important because by knowing about these resources it will be easy to make a referral and keep the student in school and moving toward their stated career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
HAROLD, This is a good point because many students come to school without adequate reading skills as well as deficient study skills. Helping them to learn how to learn will be a great service as these skill sets will transfer to other classes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Teresa, Having taught one student classes no matter how dynamic you are this much contact can become too much of one person. I would develop or secure case studies that cover the essential knowledge the student needs to have for the course. Then I would have her work through a case study and have a discussion where she tells you what she has learned and how she applied the information. This way the venue of delivery will be the case studies and you all aren't setting at a table staring at each other all class period. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ruth Ann, I use guided notes with my PP slides as well. These guides really help the students to get the essential core concepts down but as a result of having the guides they don't feel overwhelmed in trying to write down every word that is said. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, You are going to really like the results you achieve by using this information to plan your instructional delivery. Your students are going to be engaged and focused and you are going to be able to share your content in an effective and efficient manner. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
