About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Gina, It is good to visually to remind students of what is going to be covered. By having the objectives on the board you are showing them how many of the objectives have been covered and how there are yet to work toward for each class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, Students like variety of delivery and change of pace so the more you can offer both the more engagement you are going to have with your students. Also, this is where the creative part of teaching comes in because you get to try new and different ways of communicating your message. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, You have a good plan for informing the students of your expectations. It never hurts to spend plenty of time going over the due dates and projects because students have a tendency to tune out until the last minute so by repeating your requirements you are helping them to "remember" when they have things due. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erica, Good way to reinforce your course policies, expectations and requirements. By going over them verbally as well as supplying them via a written format you are letting your students know the importance you are attaching to the course and their performance. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tamatha, Thanks for sharing your experience with us. This is good information for other beginning instructors to have as they plan to meet their students for the first time. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erica, I like the way you lay out how you are going to operate your class and interact with your students. Your first impression sets the tone as you say for that course as well as future courses. This way you have already established your classroom approach with your students and then you can build from there. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gina, Good point about making a positive first impression. As you say this starts the development of respect and then builds from there. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tamatha, How do you share this information from the syllabus with your students? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeanette, Right you are and this is why after going to the effort to prepare a syllabus an instructor needs to cover it with the students to they will see it as an informative document that they can use throughout the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erica, I have experienced this as well. I try and work with the students but I will not let their attitude affect the learning of the other students. If they disrupt the class I will remove them because the other students do have the right to learn. I try to help the challenging students to find someone in the college to help them with career planning so they can find an area that appeals to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
