About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Aileen, You are a great example of someone that has passion for her field while being excited about helping to prepare the next generation of professionals to enter your field. I agree with your goal of being an example and sharing content through application. This is what good teaching is about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Donald, I agree that you need to have enthusiasm and passion in your instructional efforts. These two elements will help to "sell" the content for the students and they will see a model, you in front of them sharing what you know and how they can apply what they are learning. A win win situation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Martin, Students like to hear how the content they are learning applies to their careers. By sharing your experiences you are increasing the value of what you are teaching for your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Martin, Helping them to see what your course has to offer in relation to their career goals is very important. You are helping the students to see the ROI that will result from their passing your course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sultana, Good way to start a new course. The more information you know about your students the better you are going to be able to earn their respect and get them engaged in the learning process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Larry, Well said. The walk is the value part of professional development. The talk is only talk until it becomes walk. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mignonne, You make a very good point about compartmentalization and why it is so important for students to be able to do this in their learning process. When they do then the content doesn't seem overwhelming and they are able to work through the sections they need to learn. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cheyney, I agree and have use Venns many times and many different situations. A clear and concise way to show the interaction and/or integration of different elements/contents/ingredients in the final product. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Vennetta, This is a good strategy to use because as you mention when they start to wear down you can have them pull out their goals and see how far they have come so far and how much closer they are to achieving their goals. I have found that my students get worn down just after the mid-point of the course and this is when I need to pull out the goal statements and get them ramped up again so they can finish the course with vigor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Freddie, Good for you. The learning of student names early on in a course is a way to earn their respect and establish you as the learning leader. It is a building process from there. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
