About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

TC, Good points because these points are what set the tone for a positive class. Bringing passion for the field and enthusiasm for teaching it helps the students to see how they can be successful if they will put forth the needed effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
A, This is what gives value to the syllabus. This information reduces student misunderstandings and frustration. They know the expectations, requirements and policies of the course and how the course is going to be managed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
A, Right you are. It is at this point that the students start to see themselves and their futures unfolding. They realize that with hard work and effort they soon will be in their field and enjoying the results of all their hard work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mabelle Joy, I think you are really going to get great results with these efforts plus you and your students will get to share some enjoyable times together as you talk and joke with them. Helping them to get settled into the class each time is an important part of instructional planning as you have identified. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bianca, Good point and something all of us instructors need to remember as we approach our students. We need to be passionate about our content and enthusiastic about teaching it. This way the students will have confidence in our abilities and leadership. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lawrence, You have done a great job of explaining why certain concepts and content needs to be retained and repetition helps to keep that content alive and in the memories of the students. Later when they are out in the field they will appreciate the fact that they have this information in their working memory. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, Good point because students frequently leave their class content at the classroom door. The more we can help them see relevancy and make application of what they are learning the more valuable their education becomes to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sean, Well said. Yes, people do like secrets and you are sharing one with your students. You are engaging them in the learning process and they are seeing how your content is going to help move them toward their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sean, You have a good strategy going for all of your learners through your methods. You are appealing to their different learning preferences and course goals. This way everyone is benefiting from your sharing of content and practical applications. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dawn, For many content areas this approach works very effectively. I would give this approach a try and see how your students react to it and how engaged they become. I think you will really like the results you get. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
