About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Carrie, I think this type of information is very important for students to have because so many of them select a field and do not know the realities associated with it such as starting pay, hours or even the context of the work they will be doing. The more you can share this right up front the more they will understand why they are being taught what they are and how they can be successful in the field if they will put forth the effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joseph, Right you are about being examples for the students. They need to see us as learning leaders in a way that reflects our content and our field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lindsey, We are role models whether we want to be or not as a result of being instructors. It is critical that we display as you have said the elements of proper career conduct and representation for our students. This way they will have a standard from which to develop themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tim, Good work. I like the model you are following because you are really targeting your students in a way that enables them to use their processing skills to internalize the content that is being shared. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tim, Right you are about the need for and value of reinforcement such as you are giving. To be validated by an authority figure is important to students. Your method serves to help them to internalize the fact that they are doing well in their learning effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nelson, So true and so important to the success of our students. They need to know we will support them if they will put forth the effort needed to be successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nelson, The more we know about our students the more accurately we can plan our instruction to support their learning. This information gives us insight into how we can target their learning preferences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariesol, Good strategies. Concerned students like this need early success in class along with your support. It won't be long before they are settled in and are able to focus on their learning goals for the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariesol, Good idea for how to get students to review and see what is contained in the syllabus and why they need to use it as a course guide. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariesol, I use field trips a lot in my classes for the reason you state. They get to see professionals in the field for which they are preparing to enter. These observations really ramp up their motivation levels and get them excited about what they are studying. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
