About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Angela, All good ways to expand your instructional delivery options as an effective educator. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Richard, I think this is a very good way to expand your expertise as an educator. Observing others helps you to see how you can improve and be creative in your own instructional planning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, Good strategy to follow because of the points you listed. This way you can adjust as needed to keep the students focused on the content being shared. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gordon, I like the way you describe how to achieve FOCUS both for yourself and your students. Refocus is critical as students wear down during the later part of the course so we need to ramp up our excitement and activities and get them back into seeing the value of the content being presented. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erin, YES, IT IS! If we don't bring passion for our field and enthusiasm for teaching our content it is for sure our students will not be engaged. We have a great opportunity to share our knowledge with others and we need to be excited about getting to do it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, I think this is a great way to make the course content real as well as introduce the students to "real life" in their career field. The more experiences they can have the easier the transition will be to the work world. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rickey, Both comments are right on in terms how to engage students in the learning process. They must see how they fit into the class, are comfortable with being their and can see the value of what is being taught. This sets the stage for learning success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, So important to establishing a connection to students in a way that encourages their participation and increases their comfort in the class. This sets the stage for a interactive and engaging class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Linda, Thank you for these comments about the value that comes from having a well prepared syllabus. Since the syllabus is a standard one you don't have to worry about coming up with and listing all of the college policies, requirements, etc.. As you mention you have developed a detailed addendum so you can share even more specific details with your students about the course. I think this is a very important element to include because as you say one more informational item provided to the students can reduce their excuses for "not being informed" of expectations.
