About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Erika, Good way to check for understanding in the moment. This way you can see if the information you are sharing is getting through to them and how you can make any adjustments you need to make to keep them on target. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gordon, Students really like to hear stories from their instructors. These stories help to make the content come alive and have value to them. Also, they are good motivators because the students hear about how it really is in the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Yolanda, Assessments can take many forms and you are offering a choice to your students. The key is to assess what they have learned in the course. How you do that is up to your professional judgement and expertise. Sounds like a fun final project. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Yolanda, Right you are. This is how we determine if we are meeting the students learning needs for our course. We need to get feedback from our students on an ongoing basis throughout the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Erika, Checking for understanding needs to be an ongoing part of our instructional planning. If our students are not "getting it" we are of no value to them. We have to connect with them on an ongoing basis if we are going to be effective as instructors. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, This is an ongoing need for all instructors. Our material needs to be fresh, current and engaging each time we teach the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erika, I use icebreakers to start each new class. They are a great way to get everyone settled in and introduced to each other, not to mention they are a lot of fun to do. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Yolanda, Good point. We need to bring passion for our field and enthusiasm for teaching our content to the classroom each time we enter it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Erika, I think this is a great service for your students. Many college students today do not have note taking or study skills that are highly developed. This lecture gives them tools for success if they will put forth the effort to follow them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brandon, Good tips for instructors to follow. There has to be a plan for each class session. If there isn't then the class can go off the rails quickly and the result will be unhappy students and minimum learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
