About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Sarah, Students as you have learned really perk up when their instructor tells a story from the field. These stories capture their interest and increases the value of the course content because they show students how the apply the content that is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sarah, Well said. Students need to feel accepted and valued from the first class meeting on. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sarah, Little things like some posters, color or comfort help to establish a positive learning environment for students. This sets a professional tone for them as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sarah, Good points and the two items, good attitude and listening are very valuable for an instructor to use. These two go a long way in helping to earn the respect of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dale, Learners like a routine so they can plan their learning efforts within certain activities or time frames. You have made your instructional plan clear to the students and they can then work within those time frames. Reduces uncertainty and frustration. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Wendy, I agree with your analysis about learning styles. As learners we have preferences but we are able to learn in other modes. As instructors the more variety we have in our instructional delivery the more opportunities we have to engage our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Wendy, I know you will see great benefits in earning the respect of and developing rapport with your students by taking a few minutes to do an introduction session. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Wendy, Good observation and a valuable one to remember. If we are not excited about what we are teaching it is for sure the students won't be either. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Travis, So true and something we need to remember. Looking through the eyes of our students helps us to remember we were once there as well and then adjust our approach to reflect the needs of our current group of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Christine, It is through student feedback we can learn how effective we are and what modifications we need to make. This information gives up a great venue for course improvement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
