About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

James, This is one of the most important lessons your students can learn. My frustration, which I have had for the many years I have been a teacher, is that students become too focused on grades for the course and not how they are developing their career potential and can make applications outside of the classroom. Will keep up my effort as you do yours because when you have students that do "get it" and see the relevancy then it is worth it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Imelda, They really need to get this point in their minds. If they can't write an effective letter asking for a loan it is for sure they aren't going to get it. Clear and concise communication is a must in all of our careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Imelda, This is such important information to have as it guides you in your customizing of your instructional delivery for that class of learners. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Imelda, This is a great example and one that should really stick in the minds of students. Good communications skills are essential no matter the field so the more value you can help your students to associate with their communication skills and career success the better. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katie, I agree. Walking into a lab that reflects the field and is ready for them to interact with means a lot to students. They can see that effort has been put forth to get the lab ready for their learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kali, Your energy will generate energy in students leading to increased motivation and engagement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ghaleb, There are many different problem solving models out there that critical thinkers can use. The key is to have a "common sense" approach to the problem solving method you are going to use and then you will be able to come up with some proposed solutions to test with others. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Elizabeth, I use this method a lot and it is very effective. The small groups as you know get very excited about coming up with a solution and then "testing" it by sharing with the other groups. I always enjoy these sessions as they generate a lot discussion and participation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ghaleb, The more information a person has the easier it is to propose a solution. Your approach is helping the students to gather information and then proposed solutions that are factual and well thought out. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, Many students need to see the parts and/or whole concept they are studying. Graphic organizers can be squares, steps, circles, or flow charts of the different steps or concepts that need to be learned. The students can fill out the graphic organizers as the class progresses and they give the students reference points on how they need to work through certain steps, formulas, or recipes.
