About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Phuong, Good point because this way the students can process the information in a number of different ways. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
DANIEL, Right you are. What are some of the methods you use to get to know your students better? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brenda, Adult students are just taller children. My students like to receive praise as well as rewards, including candy when they win the "Question of the Day" award. Activities like this are fun and engaging for the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cleveland, For me the first class meeting is so exciting because I get to meet a new group of students and learn about them. By having fun ice breakers and an introduction session we get to settle into the course and start to learn about each other and how we are going to work with each other during the upcoming course. Always a great day! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cleveland, A career vision is so important in the educational journey for students. They need to refresh in their minds over and over what they will be able to do upon graduation. They tend to wear down during courses and forget or at least reduce their effort as the vision of their future drifts away as a result of real life. So bringing the vision back up on their radar really helps to get them engaged once again. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Autumn, Thank you for these great comments on generating student excitement about their courses. They need to realize they have chosen their career field and these courses move them closer to achieving their goal of working in the field. They should relish the opportunity to come to class and learn new content and skills. Unfortunately this is not the case with many students. Education on the post secondary level is an opportunity not an entitlement and the students need to assume the responsibility that goes with being students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cleveland, Clear goals and objectives are the guide posts for the course. They map out where the course is going to go and what is going to be learned in the process. Without them as you say there will be chaos and a high level of student frustration. There is no reason for this to occur with some good planning and preparation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cleveland Joel, I wish you much success as you continue to impact the lives of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jamie, Like your definition. If we can help our students to be able to work through the steps you listed then I think we will have done them a great service in relation to their career preparation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marlene, They are such a simple yet valuable resource for the students to use. They have so many different applications that they can be used in almost every setting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
