About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Terry, Good way to start off a new course. Everyone has the same information and can work from there throughout the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Madelaine, Without a well prepared syllabus the students do not know where the course is going. The expectations, polices and requirements need to be spelled out and reviewed so everyone starts the course on the same page. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrea, A college is not being fair nor professional if it does not supply the latest equipment and content to students. Instructors should not be expected to teach with broken or outdated equipment. Students are paying to receive an education that prepares them to enter their field prepared. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, Well said and an important point to be reinforced. To offer less than the most current equipment and content is to short change the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Louise, An environment that supports learning is a must. Often instructors don't review the environment before class. They need to do a walk through and try to see the classroom/lab through the eyes of students so any adjustments can be made. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Krista, Glad to hear that you have found a professional development plan that is working for you. As you know teaching is an ongoing effort to expand one's expertise and skill sets. I wish you continued teaching success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, Sounds like you have a great professional development plan laid out for yourself. I congratulate you for the effort you have expended to expand your instructional expertise. Keep up the good work and I wish you much teaching success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, Thank you for sharing how you adjust your instructional style to fit the setting. This way you can reach each student based upon the type of instructional delivery being used. As you mention lab classes are different from more formal lecture classes and how you interact with students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, This is what helps to "sell" the course to the students because they know you are excited about what you are sharing with them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terry, I am with you on arriving early and getting settled in. By the time class is ready to start I am ready to enjoy sharing with my students. Class goes so much better for everyone with preparation and early arrival. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
