About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Madelaine, This is such an important part of their total education. Helping them to get a vision about how all of their courses fit together into a sequence that helps them to be prepared to enter the field of their choice. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, This is a very important part of the introduction process. You are asking your students for a commitment via the signed statement that they have received, read and understand the expectations of the course. This sends a message that says you are serious about the course and you hope they are to. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, Right you are about the different learning preferences of students. They do learn in different ways so the more variety we can introduce into our instructional delivery the better. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Krista, Right you are so this is why instructors need to be prepared and organized for the first class meeting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terry, Good point to push with your students. They need to see you expect and will help them to meet the standards of the field so their transition to the work world will not be traumatic. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrea, Yes, students are very interested in the experiences their instructors have had. You are evidence of what a career person should be like and you get to model that for your students. So feel free to share stories and examples throughout your course when a story and topic match. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Great idea! I would think this is a lot of fun, fast paced and gets everyone talking. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brady, Good advice for instructors to follow. Have fun, get the students settled and be yourself. This forms a good foundation for the upcoming course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristia, Like your description of the syllabus cheesy or not. It is exactly what a syllabus should do for the students as they start a new course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Mo, You have laid out a very good plan for how to use the syllabus. By having a well prepared syllabus and reviewing it with students at the beginning of a new course you have provided them with the road map of the course. It is up to them to follow it throughout the session. This is a shift for many students because they are conditioned to think that the instructor will give them slack if they don't meet deadlines, etc.. They need to see that this is college and they are adults thus the syllabus is their guide to… >>>
