About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

David, This is a good strategy to follow in professional development. The more instructional methods you are aware of the more teaching tools you have at your disposal. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary Jane, This is a good point. Students want to rush to a decision and many cases do not take the time needed to get the information that will help them to make better choices. The more you can help them to do this the better prepared they will be as they enter their career area. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary Jane, This is a very comprehensive definition of critical thinking and I think it gives many wonderful opportunities for students to use their newly developed skills in problem solving. Thank you for sharing this definition with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Graham, I like using these types of scenarios to get students involved in the real life aspects of their career area. They give them a chance to see the world they will be entering and help them make a transition to it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Diego, I agree. The students get to see the relevancy and application of the content as a result of these types of cases. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Randall, Great to hear you are excited and back with passion and excitement for teaching in your area. We all need that bit of refreshing now and then. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Adriana, This should be a fun activity for you as you are going to introduce something new not only to your students but to yourself. I teach many sections of the same course over and over so I try to do something different in each one each time I teach the course. This keeps me excited about teaching and I have a lot of fun trying new things. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Graham, I like the way you start and the way you end the course. Students get so busy during the course that they forget how much they are actually learning. You show them this as you do the end recap. I am sure they are amazed that they have learned so much and didn't even realize it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tracy, You are a great example for your students. You are the person that they can talk with and model after because you did it and was successful. Yes, coming back to school is tough but with early success and the building of self confidence it is possible for each student to do well in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sharon, Thank you for these good comments on how to support student success in the classroom. You are right about how early success can create even more success for students. Knowing they have the support of their instructor and that they can depend on their life experiences to help them means a lot in terms of course success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
