About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Maria, Thank you for helping to reinforce the value of a syllabus. The syllabus is the road map (GPS) for the course and as a result it needs to be clear and concise so it will be easily understood by students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Hayli, Thank you for the reinforcement of how important the syllabus is to the success of a course. Your experience with syllabi as a student helps you to see how you want to develop your own when that opportunity arises. This is a valuable document that should not be overlooked. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, You make an excellent point with your last sentence. Personality is a important part of teaching style and student engagement. Your personality helps to "sell" the course and the level of engagement the student is going to have. Teaching online is tough for the reasons you list so it takes special planning and effort to compete for the attention of students for sure. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeanie, This is an important part of being a professional educator. Also, being prepared gives you confidence and reduces nerves when you know you are ready and your equipment is in place. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeanie, So true. Not having enough nor the right materials is very frustrating to students. They need to have adequate supplies and current equipment to use in their training. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jayne, Good way to maintain consistency in the delivery of your content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Judith, So true. Without clear goals and objectives no body knows what is going on nor where the course is going. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Great way to stay current. Your field is one that seems to be changing at times overnight based upon some event or ruling. You systematic way of staying on top of polices and best practices is extremely valuable to your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Chenal, Good approach for the students to get them engaged and focused on the content as well as helping them to become a part of the activities and application of content process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, This is a great way to customize your instruction for each class. You are targeting the needs of the current students while still providing the content in a sequential manner. I start in a week teaching five sections of the same course and I really appreciate your comments in relation to how each type of instructional delivery can be conducted to keep students engaged. I use a model much like this so I stay fresh for each section since even though I have been through it before this is the first time for each student. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
