About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Martin, Good analysis of where we are at today with our instructional environments. There certainly is a mix out there as a result of technology and different delivery options. The key is to key the learner at the center of what we do and at times this can be a real challenge. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gina, Sounds like you have good support from your school in expanding your instructional expertise and professional development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Martin, This has been my experience as well. Making such applications brings value to the content and increases student buy in through their seeing of the relevancy of what they are learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Teresa, This is a common problem with many students. They want to complete the assignment rather than develop the skills the assignment asks them to use. I think your school is on the right track in getting them to slow down and create a sequence of thinking and problem solving to arrive at the end product. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Teresa, I think this is a good way to get they started in developing their ability to express themselves while gaining skill in critical thinking. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mario, Thank you for these great comments about how to develop as an independent thinker. The majority of careers are based upon independent thinking and problem solving. This ranges from the medical field to auto tech and all careers that require solutions to situations or problems. The more skills we can help our students develop in independent and reflective thinking the better prepared our students will be when they are in the workplace and thinking of this type is a must. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, Good plan for how to use graphic organizers. They help students to put the parts of the course and the topics of the day into perspective and to create a learning sequence. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ronna, This is a good plan because it reinforces the content that has been shared and reinforces the value of it in terms of applications that can be made. This makes the content real to them and increases their engagement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, The more examples and applications of real world experiences you can share with your students the better. They need to see the connection between the content being shared and how they will use this information in the work place. When they see such a connection the ROI for the course really goes up for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, Good plan to follow and your comments shows how it is paying off. This is how you keep students engaged throughout the class sessions and moving forward with their learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
