About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Michael, Support systems are very important to and for students. These systems both in and out of school help to keep students in school and moving toward to their career goals. Students with support systems are much more likely to complete their programs than those have to go it alone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lorraine, This is what I call making it real for the students. You are showing your students the relevancy of the content via their own experiences. This increases their engagement while expanding the value they relate to the content being covered. This sets up a win win situation for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dave, Well said. This is such an important part of the total teaching effort. A good first impression gets the students engaged and looking forward to the upcoming class sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lorraine, I like to use learning communities for case studies and problem solving. Your efforts to establish a classroom community are right on and I know they will yield good results for your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lorraine, I have taught in settings like this that make it very difficult to deliver my content in a way that engages the students. As a result I had to do a lot of adapting to make sure I was getting the material covered while keeping my students interested and with minimum distractions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lorraine, Student centered teaching is what we should all be about. You have the right idea and your instructional planning reflects how you are going to focus your attention and delivery. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Shonna, I really like your approach in helping the students to shape their future through they own efforts. You are showing them that they have more options than they think they do and that they through reflective and critical thinking come up with ways to network and expand career options for themselves. I think this increases the value of their education for them as they can start to see that through their efforts they can be successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Example and illustration bring value to the content for students. They start to see as a result of examples and illustrations the relevancy and application of the content and this increases their ROI in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amber, "Reading" students is an important part of the educational process. You make a good point about how instructors need to have a variety of activities planned so they can make adjustments as needed in order to keep the attention of their students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, So true. Each class is different so customizing your instruction to and for that group is necessary if you are going to get them engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
