About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Charles, I have the same challenges with my students. They do not or will not focus on the soft skills to the point that they set themselves apart from others that are seeking the same positions that they are after. I hit soft skills hard in my lectures as well as activities I have them do. As you know some get it and some don't. The don't then wonder why they can't seem to catch a break when it come to employment. Sad. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kathleen, Helping students to see the components or segments of content using graphic organizers proves to be extremely valuable in moving them forward in the material. They get a more global perspective this way and yet get to see how the parts fit together. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, Examples and stories from the field are critical to showing both application and relevancy. The more connection you can create between the content and their career goals the better. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jennifer, Good way to show the ROI to the students. They through this approach can see the value they are getting for their time and effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Angie, Great to hear how the content has been of value to you. I wish you continued success as you impact the lives of those students in your college. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, Like your approach. Listening is one of the most valuable learning tools there is. Also, you are showing respect by listening to your students and considering their opinions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Tracy, I do the same in my classes because I don't value the mid-term and end-term surveys. They are so formal and with standard questions that don't give me the input I am seeking to really refine my course. I use frequent feedback from my students so I can make any adjustments needed while the course is ongoing. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Respect is two way and starts the first day of class. As respect is earned then rapport can be developed and this is when student engagement really takes off. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, You make a good point for us instructors to remember as we do our instructional planning. We need to be student centered as we plan our activities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, This is an important point because it helps the instructor to provide support at critical times. The "why" forms the foundation for customized student centered instruction. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
