About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Peggy, Yes it should. This way the students will be able to focus on acquiring the needed content as it applies to their different use of their intelligences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheretta, To step into a class and not be prepared is to say "I don't care enough about you as learners to get ready for the class.". This is not only disrespectful but also unprofessional. We have to be prepared to the best of our ability each and every time the class meets. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Peggy, Good strategies to follow. You are doing a number of things that will assist in your professional development and expertise expansion. Keep up the good effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheretta, Being professional is one of the most important roles you can play for your students. You are setting the standard for the field as well as giving your students a role model to follow. This is what being a learning leader is about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, This is a great way to get students started in the development of their problem solving skills. Knowing their types will help them locate resources in those areas and combine them with what is known to reach solutions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, I have been researching the assessment of Gardner's seven intelligences for the past twenty years and have developed an assessment called the "Talent Key". The assessment shows the three dominant intelligences of an individual. We use this information to format our instructional delivery because we know how they are internalizing information and applying it to their educational growth. Much more to learn what a experience it has been to learn this much about how people function. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, Great point and one that is hard for most of my students to grasp. Self discipline requires effort and takes time. Once it has been developed the results are great. Self disciplined thinkers are the source of solutions to problems. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Phil, Mind maps is along the same line. The key is to find a method or procedure that enables the students to see parts as well as the whole of what they are studying. In using the mind maps I am sure you have experienced how your student start to see the parts and then how they all fit together. This is one of those "ah-ha" moments in teaching. That is what we are striving for with strategies like graphic organizers and/or mind maps. You are on the right track. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ray, An upbeat attitude is valuable when it comes to class management and engagement. If the students know you are excited about being in class it will spread to them as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Ray, Feedback on a regular basis helps to share the outcome of the course for students. Knowing where they are at in the course and what they need to work on gives them direction in their studies and enhances their success opportunities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
