About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Kevin, Repetition is a very effective learning tool. As instructors we need to come up with ways to use repetition while keeping the attention of our students. I use a lot of case studies and games. We go over the material numerous times but each time it is slightly different and thus the students keep their focus. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kevin, This is a great way to increase the ROI of doing assignments. You are letting your students become a part of the assignment process rather than just telling them what they need to do to complete the assignment. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kevin, Good way to keep all of your students engaged. You are using their life experiences to build upon the course content so each student can see what he or she has to contribute to the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kevin, This is a good point and one that needs to be remembered as we interact with students. It may take a while for some students but in the long term most will see the value of what you are doing and how it will impact their lives. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Valaire, There is nothing wrong with having fun in class. You are right about the shared laugh and the impact it has on learning. I am a big fan of using humor in the classroom so the students look forward to coming to class and learning in a setting that is enjoyable. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joanna, Teaching today involves a lot of effort to engage students. It is often call edutainment. This is why at times instructors are both informers and well as performers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kevin, This is true because you are projecting a part of your passion for your field as well as your personality through your lectures. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Valaire, This is one of the rewards of being an instructor. You get to develop such a relationship and then assist them as they move forward in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Valaire, Two very good points on how to relate to students and get them engaged in the learning process. This is how respect and rapport is developed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joanna, Good advice to give to such students. Test anxiety is very real for some students so anything you can do to calm them down and get them to focus on what they know and how to share it with you is going to be of help. For the most part they are much more knowledgeable than they think they are if they can settle in and perform on the assessments that are given. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
