About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Emily, Like the way you have analyzed how we need to approach the classroom after teaching for a while. We need to be realistic as we prepare content for our courses. By bringing in new activities we can remain fresh and also reflect on how we are doing our professional best to share content. It becomes the students' responsibility to work hard and practice self discipline to be successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Julie, Good way to blend the different experience levels of your students. Your use of visuals helps to seal the content in the minds of your students because they are seeing as well as hearing the information they need to learn. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Anthony, All great ways to get students to see the relevancy of the content being taught as well as make application. This format helps to reinforce the value of the course to the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Meredith, I would develop and use case studies. You could develop a case study around a certain drug or drug family and see how the students respond to the situation. These case studies can be set up for different amounts of time so they will fit into any time frame. You can use games where the students use the different drugs and applications or respond to question like Jeopardy. By doing so you will keep them engaged plus they will get to see both relevancy and application to what is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jacqui, Good point and one we need to remember as we do our instructional planning. We need to offer variety in our delivery so the content can be acquired by students through their different learning preferences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Anthony, So true and this is why it is critical that you always conduct yourself professionally both in and out of class. So when new students arrive in your course they know that they are being taught by a dedicated educator. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jacqui, Yes they are a good way to get everyone talking and getting to know each other. In addition, starting a new class with this type of activity helps to get the students settled in a feeling comfortable with their environment. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Anthony, Good plan to follow. I like the fact that you include the grading rubric because this greatly reduces confusion and questions from students. This way they can focus on the class requirements and see what it takes to be successful in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Anthony, This is such a great tool for gaining insight into how the course is going and what if any changes you need to make to keep the students making progress in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jacqui, Great to hear because activities like this help to expand your professional development and expertise. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
