About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Zachary, Course requirements, expectations and polices need be clear and concisely spelled out in the syllabus. By doing so you will greatly reduce questions and frustration on the part of the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Karen, Good points. If you have taught very long in your school you will have a reputation. Your reputation proceeds you so you need to make sure it is a good one. Sending a message throughout the school that you are a caring and supportive instructor goes a very long way in promoting a positive first impression. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dean, I bring in graduates frequently in my courses as well. They really increase the engagement of my current students while increasing their motivation levels. They tell it like it is and that is extremely valuable. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Zachary, Yes you do. What are some of the ways you do this with your students? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Karen, Well said in terms of describing the value of the syllabus to both the students and the instructor. It is the foundation upon which the course develops and helps students to move toward their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, It is one of the most important documents you will hand out to students. They need to see the value of it and consult it as they move through the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Zachary, Right you are. The syllabus is the road map leading to course success. It keeps everyone on the same page and moving the right direction. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dean, Good point and a career killer for sure. If you are not prepared it is easy to lose control of the class and quickly find yourself in a situation that is almost impossible to work out of. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Thomas, I like the fact you have retained your enthusiasm for teaching and passion for your field. This is a very strong attribute to carry into the classroom. I agree about the opinion of being compensated for work done but as you mention it doesn't often happen in the world in which we live. I teach in the non-profit sector and there it is even worse. The pay off I get is knowing I am leaving a legacy of well prepared individuals that will be successful in my field. That is what keeps me coming back to the classroom even… >>>

Zachary, Observing instructors is a very effective professional development tool. Good point for us all to remember as we seek to expand our abilities as instructors. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
