About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Tequilla, You make an excellent point about personal research and problem solving. Students need to see that there are a number of ways to find about potential employment and all involve effort. They need to develop a personal procedure for working through the ways and getting results for themselves. If they don't they are going to find themselves just falling into employment rather than being able to secure their desired employment. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tequilla, Thank you for these comments about the value of using reflective thinking in problem solving efforts. The more early reflective thinking that is done the easier it will be to finalize possible solutions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tequilla, Discipline especially self discipline seems to be lacking in a lot of the students I have currently. Students need to see the value as well as the results of self discipline and how it can pay off in terms of results. The more experiences and examples we can share with them along this line the better. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tequilla, Thank you for these steps to follow in developing the abilities of critical thinkers. Your steps are right on and will be valuable to your students once they are out in the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
AMANDA, This is such an effective and simple method to use. Just used it this afternoon and had great discussion sessions throughout the class as the students worked in their groups. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
AMANDA, Great to hear about your teaching success to date. It will be a new experience when you have larger classes. The opportunities for different types of group activities will greatly increase as your student population increases. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sharon, All good strategies to employ with students. The more variety and change of pace that can be offered the better. This will keep them engaged and focused on what is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
AMANDA, Like this approach because you are right about students tending to forget certain items such as due dates, etc.. This keeps them reminded of such things on a regular basis. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bart, You make a very key point and that is the value that students associate with the course. They need to see that they are getting ROI for the time and effort they are investing. If they don't they will be gone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, This has been my observation as well. It takes a blending of excitement and passion to be an effective instructor. By making the learning process fun and engaging you are setting the stage for positive learning experiences for your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
