About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Miriam, You have a clear understanding of how you can use the life of experiences of your students to connect with the content being offered. I like the way you are helping your students to see the value of developing their "soft skills" as well because they are essential in career success as we know. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brittney, Your last sentence says it all. This is what learning should be about and we need to reflect on this as we do our instructional planning. Yes, our students face many life challenges and if we can offer them support and safety for even a short while we will given them an opportunity that may keep them in school and moving forward in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, Good for you and your students. Using different forms of media as well changing the flow of class is important to the learning progress of students. They need the opportunity to "reset" their brains at times and your strategy enables this to happen. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brandy, Like the flow of your instructional delivery. You have a number of breaks in the flow of content that enable your students to reflect and review what has just been covered. This method greatly enhances the retention factor for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tommy, Good point. Bringing passion for you field to the class room and mixing it with excitement about teaching it and you have combination for learning that is going to work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jelitza, You make a very good point about how certain classes lend themselves to certain learning preferences. By you seeing the big picture you are offering instruction in different learning venues so that all learning preferences are touched upon at one time or another in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jelitza, This is a good way to get student involvement and buy-in. You are listening to them and seeking their input and the result is that you are earning their respect from the first class session forward. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brandy, Right you are and something every instructor needs to remember as he or she preps for the first class meeting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
NaKeta, Yes it is. The first impression sets the tone for the class and shows the students what they can expect in the class sessions to come. This makes them a lot more comfortable as they get settled in. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, Good way to get the students settled into your course while sharing with them that they have a learning leader that is experienced and knowledgeable about his field. This is a great foundation upon which to build as you engage the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
