About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Colleen, Yes you do. It is an ongoing process as the needs of the class can change at different times and instructors need to be able to "read" the class and then respond with the appropriate supports. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rusty Din, This is such an important part of the instructional process. You are showing your students respect by learning their names quickly and in return your are earning theirs. This sets the tone for a positive learning experience by everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rusty Din, I agree. Excitement is catching. If we have passion for our content and enthusiasm for teaching it our students will be excited as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rusty Din, Students need to see how they fit into the class and what their success potential is and you are giving them that information with your pep talk. This should increase their excitement about the course and how it fits into their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Rusty Din, This is a great way to get everyone on the same page in terms of course requirements and expectations. Also, by doing this type of review over expectations you answer many of the questions the students have before they even have to ask them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Aleah, Yes it does. It is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is built. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Aleah, Yes, it was. This is not the first time I have heard this from instructors. Instructors need to be able to teach in an environment that will be supportive of their instructional style without minimum distractions. You are fortunate that you were able to have such a setting available to you. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Aleah, Thank you for reinforcing this concept. A number of instructors have told me that it doesn't matter how you dress or conduct yourself the students are only interested in what you teach them. I have a hard time with this because it does matter as you say. We need to be models of our profession in all that we do not just in the content we share. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Juanito, The key word here is graphic. The more images we can send their way so they can internalize them in their brains the better. The more senses used in learning the greater the retention of content is going to be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Juanito, This is what customized student centered teaching is about. I wish you much success as your share your knowledge and expertise with your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
