About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Mary Ellen, Good way to start a class of new students. This exchange of information creates a foundation for the development of trust and the earning of respect. With both of the elements in play by both you the instructor and the students the class is ready to move forward with learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Patricia, This is a good way to get students familiar with the problem solving process. The questions under each section are the key to successful problem solving. The more skill and experience they have in creating these questions they more effective they are going to be in problem solving once they are out in the work world. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Curt, Thank you for sharing this examples of how graphic organizers are being used in your setting. I use them a lot in my classes as well because of the help they give my students with understanding segments of content and how the segments then fit together make a complete project. Discussion Comment
LARRY, Students like a change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are doing both with your approach and this increases their ability to stay connected to the learning process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Well said. From creditability comes the foundation upon which rapport can be developed. When rapport is present then learning is enhanced and a dynamic learning environment can be created. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Misty, Instructors need to stay current in their fields if they are going to have any relevancy and/or status with their students. Students will quickly disconnect from the class if they feel an instructor is not offering content that reflects current best practices. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Good information to give them and to set the tone for the class. Professional behavior seems to be harder to communicate to students today. They do not see the reason for professional dress, conduct, language, etc.. We as instructors need to impress upon them that career success is based upon a professional image as well as ability. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Misty, The first impression is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is built. We need to make sure it is a positive one for the students because from this impression can come the earning of their respect and the development of rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Misty, Your comments are right on target as to the value of a well prepared syllabus. Clear communication about polices, requirements and expectations should be the outcome of the syllabus. This provides the students with the information they need to plan and provide the needed requirements of the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Roberta, You are in a perfect place to develop as an instructor since you are both an instructor and student. Your perspective gives you insight as to how you want to communicate and support your students. I wish you continued success in your professional development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
